Why We Chose 100% Dairy-Free, Plant-Based Protein

Many people discover Whole Blending through our plant protein. It’s 100% plant-based and certified vegan, with no milk or whey. This was not an afterthought; it was one of the very first decisions I made when designing the product.

From the beginning, I set three rules for our protein line:

1. Use only plant-based ingredients, with no dairy.
2. Avoid plant creamers, emulsifiers, and unnecessary thickeners.
3. Do not use artificial flavors, colors, or synthetic additives.

Why no dairy?
Milk and dairy products have traditionally been seen as “health foods,” but more experts now view them as optional or preference-based rather than essential. Personally, I almost never consume dairy.

Some research has raised questions about milk proteins such as casein and their potential links to certain health risks. The science is still debated, but for ingredients that are not clearly necessary, I prefer to err on the side of caution – especially for something people may drink every day.

There’s also the issue of comfort. Around seven out of ten Koreans are estimated to have some degree of lactose intolerance. For many, protein shakes made with dairy can cause bloating, skin concerns, or general digestive discomfort. I felt there was a real need for a protein that was completely free from milk but still satisfying and delicious.

Why no plant creamers, emulsifiers, or thickeners?
Many protein shakes rely on emulsifiers, thickeners, and plant creamers to create a rich, dessert-like texture. While they make the mouthfeel more indulgent, these ingredients have been questioned for their potential impact on the gut and metabolic health when consumed frequently.

Because our products are designed for daily use, I decided not to use them. I’d rather the texture be naturally smooth from the proteins and grains themselves than artificially “perfect.”

Why no artificial flavors or colors?
Artificial flavors and colors can make products taste stronger and look more appealing, but high intakes have been associated with allergic and hypersensitivity reactions in some people. For Whole Blending, I chose to exclude them entirely – not only from our protein, but from all of our products.

Our plant protein is formulated to minimize common triggers and unnecessary extras. It’s a dairy-free, lactose-free, clean-label option that both adults and children can enjoy with peace of mind. The upcoming Black Bean flavor follows exactly the same principles.
